I beleive that entanglement occurs because of higher dimensional space. It is a belief because I can not derive it or prove it using the usual assumptions of physics.
Matter according to string theory is made in 10 dimensions. The 11th dimension of Witten, according to Duff, is just the connection between dark matter and our visible matter.
So in the aspect experiment, where say two photons of opposite spin are made and fly off in opposite directions, it is said that the photons are "entangled". This is because if we measure both spins the the same time they are always opposite. But according to quantum mechanics the spins are not fixed. So somehow the two photons are coupled. This is called entanglement, a placeholder word.
I think the entanglement can be understood from the 10 dimensions required by string theory to create the photons. It is said that 6 of the 10 dimensions shrink or compactify down to Planck scales. My opinion or belief is that the two photons (same for any particle) continue to be coupled via the compactifed dimensions which from our perspective look like a line connecting the two photons flying off in opposite directions.
Such a concept as entanglement can perhaps explain telepathy between you and your twin. The two minds are entangled. Out of body experience OBE is explained the same way. The consciousness that leaves the body is entangled with the consciousness that remains in the body. The two are actually one consciousness. It is said in the OBE books that I have read, that a silk line connects the OBE with the body, and that death results if the line is broken. Sounds like compactified dimensions to me.
BTW entanglement happens instantly- faster than the speed of light- consistent with your intuition.
The Aspect experiment was to test the EPR paradox(Einstein-Po???-Rosen) Einstein originally invented the experiment as a thought exp that would prove quantum mechanics to be incorrect. What happened instead is that relativity was proven to be incorrect as the entanglement process proceeds faster than the speed of light.

Personally I think that entanglement explains thoughtforms. My evidence is that if you want to remember something, especially some system thing, all you have to do is to recall one small element of it and suddenly the whole system of thought is recalled.
Such entanglement is also the means that intelligent beings can exist in dark matter. Dark matter in my opinion is composed of a superfluid of axions in which information can be stored and processed. Entanglement has to be the mechanism that keeps the information in one place, just as it probably does in each of our memories. BTW I think our memory, long term anyway, is stored in that dark matter medium (which pervades our galaxy and our bodies). It also accounts for lucid dreams, and the thoughtform creation of the landscape of our dreams.
