Our self-importance is so strong and fine-tuned that we see ourselves 'in the middle' of it all. There is a great deal of contemporary study in the psychology of math, and many folks think the patterns we see are just imaginary.

Can of worms, I know, especially to you, Alex, but I think it's an interesting argument.

I think you are as guilty of the anthro-centrist bias as the theists you decry. We simply are not that important, and the fact that math is not perfect shows that there might be a better explanation 'out there' somewhere.

In the Weinberg/Polkinghorne debate Harv and I have discussed lately, you can, for a fleeting moment, see (hear) it in both the theist and atheist position -- Godel's highlighting of math's imperfections leaves a lot of questions unanswered, and possibly unanswerable.
