I would be a little more encouraged if the accounts of what is going on in science written for general audience weren't so consistent on always insisting that extra dimensions are rolled up.

Topologically, even though space might be flat in the big picture, an extra dimension is required even for local deformations. I think physicists still think space is locally deformed in the presence of mass, don't they?
