I have both faith in god and fear of god for god often has rather harsh short-term solutions for the long-term survival of the human race. Genocide for example.

The only thing that threatens the human race in the long-term is nuclear weapons. In order to do away with them, the super powers that possess these weapons have to become united against a common foe. We see that happening right now- yesterday to be exact.

The common foe is Islamic fundamentalism. They are the choosen people, not the jews. They are choosen by god to unite the free world in order to eliminate nuclear weapons, and as the jews have already demonstrated, being choosen means that you are choosen to suffer.

So I believe that if there is a god that can in some way, perhaps not totally, control human affairs; then that god is responsible for all that has happened recently. That god can easily tell Soma ben Ladin what to do. And so Soma believes that he is working for god. And he is. But he is also being victimized by god in order to unite the rest of the world.

That is hardly a perfect god, but a god that is doing the best he/she can to save the world from committing nuclear suicide. If god were perfect we would not have to go through all this strife.

Since that god has witnessed the same problems faced by advanced civilizations on other planets, he/she has been planning for our planets salvation for at least 2000 years as most of what has been happening was written in Revelations and other scripture 2000 years ago.

Believers in god often invoke the concept of the devil to rationalize such actions of god. Then our can remain untainted as the devil becomes responsible for all that goes wrong in the world. I believe that that is just superstition. There is but one god, if any- no room for a devil. And if there is a god, that god is clearly responsible for our current state of affairs. Just pray that the state of affairs does not get so serious that he/she has to personally come back to straighten out the mess that god has provoked.
