Mark, lets assume that NOTHING EXISTS. If nothing exists, then there is no need in explaining or describing anything, (there is nothing to explain yet).

Now, what if ANYTHING exists? Then we immediately are in logic (mathematics) world: 1=exists, 0=does not exist.

So, all existing objects obeys logic (=math) and therefore can be counted, added, etc - and their interaction thus obeys logic (math).


Now you may extend definition of 0 to any non-existing object EXACTLY the same way as you defined non-existence of something which can exist (by the very same symbol 0).

So, math correctly explains EXISTING objects.

If this is not enough for you, math ALSO explains correctly NON-EXISTING objects also by extending definition of zero to them too.


Extra credit:
Glad you mentioned definitions, by the way. As you mentioned before, you believe to some degree that there is some being "out there" which may rule or originate universe and which we may call God. Please, define God then.
