Alex,

I agree, however we have this inclination to improve based on our genetic heritage and proclivity to develop higher morals. Nonetheless, we should also allow the 'system' to work and it works best right out of the package by letting people have freedom to choose (i.e., market driven). The 'free market' idea can even be extended to the call to make people better via ideas. When ideas compete in the market place people will generally (over many generations) select ideas that benefit them and their family. Inevitably this principle is why people are concerned about the environment, condemning genocide, etc.
