you 'infer' that the reason Einstein wasn't offered a job in academia was because most physicists considered special relativity nonsense?

He tried to get such a job after he graduated with his degree in physics. This was five or six years before he published his theory of special relativity. He wasn't well thought of by his mentors specifically because of his conflicting views on many subjects. He liked his job at the patent office and it afforded him the time he needed to work on the endeavours he is famous for.
