"What is the probability of random genetic mutations producing an organism capable of pondering its own existence?"

After the above circumstance is achieved ... the conscious effort of making survival easier will follow inevitably. As a product of complex thought capability (such as curiosity), technological advance will be motivated by the emotion of "desire" (want for easier means of survival). The pace will really pick up as the emerging civilization(s) give rise to ever increasing numbers of "social wants and needs". Perhaps in just a few thousands of years (a blink of an eye on the geological time scale), the organisms will be capable of primitive means of space travel and the harnessing of energy (mankind's current position on the technology spectrum). Nevertheless the organism is always free to speculate and forecast advances in technology (speculation fueled by curiosity), ideas of which will in turn manifest as productive realities (status promotion from science fiction to science fact).
