The above web address contains an article by Steven Weinberg that I feel is very worth reading. There is one sentence that I found extremely provocative.

"With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil - that takes religion."

The title of the article is "A Designer Universe", discussing the question of God's existence as creator.

I am sure the people who blew up the World Trade Center and attacked the Pentagon believed that they were obeying the will of Allah (their god). I don't know if they were "good people", but they certainly did evil.
