I find Jisbond's post on this issue revealing. ("Don't read holy books for facts") He is scientific to the extent that he must be to function in this world, but he discards it past a certain point. If science hadn't shown that the earth WASN'T 6000 years old, I suspect he would believe it to be. Religious texts are placeholders for unknowns.
