May be arabian mathematicians were able to do research because their political leaders were busy fighting with each other (or with other powers) at the time?

Also pity that competing religions were extremely untolerant to each other in the past. Spanish priests burned tons of Maya literature (only 4 books survived), ordered to kill all Maya priests and all educated elite, and to destroy glyphs, painting, sculpture, etc - in attempts to convert indians into christianity. As a result, most of knowledge accumulated by Maya is lost.
