I am not really too concerned about astrophotography for now, maybe in the future. How spendy is Astrophotography to get into?

For the time being, really, I am just focusing on what I can see just from looking through a telescope.

For example, that photo of Saturn in the "Image Gallery" on this web site. Let's say I had the telescope that was used to get that picture. If I was just looking through the telescope, would Saturn just appear to be a small featureless disk, would I just be missing out on the color, or both? In other words, what would be the difference between that image that was taken of Saturn, and what I would see with my own eyes looking through the telescope? Would it be a drastic difference? Is it the same for all of the other planets (those close/large enough to view of course)? How about the galaxies, nebula, etc?

Going to an Astronomy party and seeing for myself first hand what I can really see would definitely be ideal. Do you know of where I can find a good list of Astronomy clubs?

I really am fascinated by the night sky, and I feel that studying it would be a great hobby, and possibly an obsession. Thanks for your help!

Scott N.
