The Milky Way

I understand how the stars appear to move around our solar system. But with my software I enable the Milky Way and animated it. It doesn't just rise and set as everything else. I seems to twirl around up there. How is this? I know the Milky Way is our own galaxy's spirals but shouldn't it be a fixed location.
