The battery pack is an alternative power source. You can use a 9 volt in the controller but the battery pack holds a larger supply (45 hours of continuous use if I recall). I'm not sure of the two labeled areas, however. Mine uses only AA (ten in total). One reason it might not be working with the battery pack is when you first plug it in you must set your hemisphere on the control (hit left for northern, right for southern). Hope I've been some help.
