Hi Lenny,

The use of a Barlow will often improve the performance of an eyepiece. This is particularly true when a fairly fast DOB is the scope with an f6 to f4.5 optical system. Most eyepieces, even the very high priced ones, can't really accomodate the broad light cone so any thing you do to reduce the light cone angle will improve the eyepiece performance. The scope I use most is a 13" f4.5 DOB mounted on an equatorial platform and I find that I use the Barlow most of the time. Using a Barlow will become a normal thing, not necessarily to produce higher power, when you really start to observe a lot.
