as i understand it, before de Broglie folks pretty much thought that matter (ie. things like protons, electrons, neutrons, atoms, molecules, ect.) behave as particles (excepting aggragates forming liquids).
de Broglie with his equation lambda=h/mv showed how any entity can have a wave length associated with it. such wavelengths are associatied with the probability density of the entity. it should be understood that wavelength lambda given by de Broglie's equation is an average wavelength reflecting a packet of waves associated with the entity.
de Broglie's equation in no way implies that a given entity will display wave properties if it has some special velocity and particulate properties above or below that special velocity.
