Peter, both light house and pulsar or garden hose emit photons (or water) which move along geodesics (say, straight line). But set of positions of DIFFERENT photons (or water molecules)in space has NOTHING to do with geodesics. It can be a spiral, it can be a sphere (light around a candela), it can be any imaginable shape.

By the way, single photon CAN travel along a curve - say, along parabola or any other curve (just make a refraction index or gravity change in a fancy manner) - it will travel along any curve from point A to point B as long as it is shortest-time-of-travel curve (geodesic).
