Actualy the vacuum energy is a conglomoration of countless numbers of particle/anti-particle pairs that are created and annhililated almost instantly but nonetheless existed for a non-zero amount of time. So this background energy is associated with quantum particles none the less. This theoretical phenomenon is a byproduct of quantum field theory which is itself a theory of particles in many respects. There is also a background field pressure which is the result of interactions of particles. |
