Actually this is not related to black holes.

Einstein announced that there's no difference between acceleration and gravity. So, a man in a lift can't find out through experiments if the lift is accelerated by engine in space or is falling towards Earth. But one of the objections was: If that man in the lift hangs two bodies with ropes to the ceiling, he can find out if the lift is falling or is accelerated:

-When in the gravitational field of the Earth, the two ropes will make some - although very small - angle, because they are attracted by the centre of the earth.

-When is accelerated by an engine, the ropes will be STRICTLY parallel.

Thus the man can find difference between gravity and acceleration. How did Einstein explain this?
