By utilizing a phenomenon called phase shift, the magnetic field appears to push and pull an ac motors' armature around. Since an ac field is constantly reversing, it has no potential difference until it is converted into dc (by use of a diode or similar "valve" device). The first ac motor was invented by Nikola Tesla, who discovered that ac could be used to generate force by phase shift.
