It takes one to know one.

Actually Smolin is the foremost leader of the Loop Quantum Gravity field, which is even more basic than string theory as spacetime itself can be derived from loop theory. He got his PhD at Harvard and now is at the Canadian Advanced Institute.

Twenty six dimensions is the original form of string theory and applies only to bosons which are the particles that carry force. It takes supersymmetry and ten dimensions to make fermions, or matter, if you are not familiar with physics.

But recently Smolin and his crew were able to derive 4-d inflation and the big bang directly from loop theory. If interested I'll provide the reference. But you may not be able to understand it.

BTW_ He no longer wants to be associated with his hypothesis. Maybe because it sounds too much like he had been smokin'. But it is all possible based on high energy physics.
