Filters?

I have an 8 inch Dob which I use in Queens, NY. There's a lot of local light but the view of the sky is decent. My problem is that when viewing the planets, I have been able to see no detail other than Saturn's rings and Jupiter's moons. I see no color whatsoever. Is the problem that I need either color or light pollution filters or do I just need to travel somewhere darker? Or am I expecting too much? If I need filter's, which colors are recommended for a good basic set?
