Me again,

I see that RH has issued an "Important new update recommended for all users.". See http://www.redhat.com/support/errata. The latest one is dated 27 Nov and is glibc no less, which could explain most anything. Joe, if you could give it a try and let me know if after you install the patch the XEphem RH 6 binary works again, or whether rebuilding from source is needed, I would be greatful.
