I kind of figured that might be the case, and agree that building a mosaic of the patches from fragments would probably be difficult. I grabbed a copy of the GSC last year from the net, but lost it in a hard drive crash, and haven't gotten it back again. How large is each chunk?
Perhaps something could be done to grab the visible patch first (as is done, now) and make that show up on screen, but also have an option that says "fetch whole patches in the background", so that the computer could be grabbing the entire thing could be grabbed asynchronously and stored locally. Then you'd have a much better response time next time out (in that patch), and over time, the sections of the sky you're interested in would fill in.
I do my stuff over what's essentially a 28.8 dialup line, so I'm big into asynchronous data aquisition, and running from local data stores. Most people just don't seem to grok that this is what multi-tasking operating systems are great for, and I'm always humored to see people tapping impatiently, waiting for a download to finish, rather than just going to another window and continuing to work. :-)
