Hello Pat, thanks for your enthusiam for XEphem.

The S&T review was in error. Accessing the GSC from the Internet does not also store them on your local drive. Your theory that the reviewer may have already had them locally is reasonable. The reason things work this way is that the Internet retrieval scheme only downloads the stars for the exact field of view to minimize bandwidth as much as possible. But the local storage uses a scheme consisting of patches of sky each 7.5 degrees on a side. So either the patches must be downloaded completely for each request (potentially slow), or a new scheme is necessary to collect and build them up incrementally (definitely a pain).
