You'll be happy to know I have successfully linked my console program to libastro and am able to get accurate circumstances for any object in the database. Now I'm converting the old Perl/Tk based GUI (which communicated with a C program to do the telescope control) to a single program in C with a Motif (LessTiff) GUI.
