In my experience mixing GUI and Device Control in the same process is not a wise architecture. It is my vision that XEphem serve as a planning and command tool only. Any object that moves will require updated ephemerides on a regular basis, an ideal role for a separate control process that can shephard the device according to its particular requirements.

As for "permissible to add code", the XEphem license allows you to make any changes you wish so long as they are for your personal use only and you do not redistribute your changes.
