I am using the openmotif RPM's on RedHat 6.2. XEphem compiled fine, but didn't link. The solution was to edit the Makefile and add -lXp to the line

XMLIB = -lXm

so that it reads

XMLIB = -lXm -lXp

save and exit then type make again and it should link fine.

Note: the line 'XMLIB = -lXm' actually appears twice in my Makefile after running xmkmf, changing the 2nd instance works. Heh and now that I looked back at it again, the commented line above the 2nd instance is

# Sometimes you need -lXp after -lXm
