freaky for me too (the three astronauts)...

BUt you're right.. ONE had to remain aboard the command module.and allegedly.. by all official counts, only 2 were ever on the Moon at one time, the third always orbiting in teh command module. His presence there was necessitated by a lot of factors, not the least of which was operation of the manual docking door locks.

Also he was the "life line" and this was only the second moon landing.. Apollo 12.

And what i said before about voiced concerns of "icing on the engines" being a great concern.. yet the could not burn fuel to fire them and de-ice in advance for fear of spending what they needed to achieve orbit. A 3rd man on the planet would not fit in the LM and was just added weight.

Sooo why is he there in that image?
