A simple experiment illustrates that the moon must rotate in order for it to constantly face towards the earth Simply draw a picture of the earth in the center with the moon orbit on the outside of it and then take an object and facing towards the earth and follow the orbits around the earth without spinning the object and you'll see when you get to the other side of the earth it's facing the back side.
Therefore if the moon did not spin you would see the back side
