Hey Glenn,
Nice report. I've heard differing reports on M101 visibility but I bet it's a lot like M33 as far as surface brightness goes; it's doable in binoculars at a dark site but impossible in most instruments under too much background light. Were the views best at the lowest magnification? - I've heard differing reports on that too. Hopefully sometime soon we'll get another clear night here and I can start answering my own questions. :)
