| Question Re Meade Saturn 114

Having recently purchased this telescope I am unsure of what quality of viewing I should expect. Nights are clear and cold here in N. California and I have seen Jupiter and Saturn although not nearly as large or as clear as I think others are seeing. Am wondering whether different eyepieces would help or if the optics need better calibration. I can see the moon very clearly. Package included a Barlow 2X scope but it dims all views appreciably. Is this normal? Finally, the SR 2.5mm eyepiece seems totally useless. I've never been able to receive a clear resolution except when looking at the moon and even then the image is very dark. Can anyone enlighten me? I appreciate your feedback.
