Battery 12/18v

This topic interests me as well.
I have a 8"LX200 (NOT GPS) that requires 18V (European model) to be driven.
My question is : can I just simply link a 18v battery(or a 12v bat. + a 6v bat. in series) into the plug on the front board of the LX200 or should I place inbetween a voltage regulator to protect my SCT's electronics ?
Thx for an answer or any hint
