I have friends, each of whom has a case, one soft, and one a JMI hard case. Each wishes he had bought the other, so there's no right answer. I personally have just been using the bottom half of the Meade shipping box in my Subaru Legacy Wagon for my 10" scope on my dozen yearly trips to dark skies. Eventually it will wear out, and before it does I'll want a case, since I want enough strength left in the box for at least one emergency shipment to Meade.
I also have Wheely Bars and wouldn't dream of living without them. Those, plus an external battery ("jump-start" style from WalMart or the like), are my can't-live-without accessories. Ok, those, plus the dew shield. But the Wheely Bars make an amazing difference in how often you'll use the scope. If you have to waste 30 to 60 minutes with setting up at the start and end of every session, you won't use it.
