The smallest Orion Dobsonian-type scope (Skyquest XT 4.5) and the Meade noncomputerized ETX-90 (called "ETX RA" or "ETX model M" can both be found for about $200 plus shipping. The Dobsonian is a little larger, i.e. can see slightly dimmer objects, but the ETX can be used for terrestrial objects (birding, etc) whereas a Dobsonian cannot (upside down/backward images). Don't buy a scope that's cheap on sale. Either of the two I just mentioned has good optics and comes with one or more GOOD eyepieces, not the overhyped and worthless eyepieces from most department-store scopes. Orion is found at their website, Telescope.com . The Meade scopes may be available at Shutan.com or astronomics.com or scopetronix.com . All of the above are honorable vendors. |
