Sometimes you have so much dew that you have no choice regarding the use of a dew zapper. That is often the case where I live. Of course, using no heat is preferable if that is physically possible. A dew shield over the front end will buy you some extra time without the need for heaters. Kendrick heaters can be adjusted to use the minimum necessary heat, making heat waves minor. And 12-volt hair-dryer-style heaters sometimes need be used only briefly every half hour or so, especially if you have a dew shield.
The heat waves will bother you most with high-magnification activities such as planetary observing, and less with deep-sky viewing or photography. Magnification magnifies the heat waves as well, of course.
