The Wedge is for photography. As the LX200 tracks in Altazmuth the field is rotated slowly. In otherwords, if you center the object, go away and come back in 1 hour the object will still be there in the center but it has turned slightly. If it's furhter from the center it will revolve around the center of the field, slightly. Now this is not a problem and hardly noticable for observing. But when taking a picture with a long exposure you need to be much more accurate than that. With the wedge in place, you select polar alignment on the hand control. The scope will then track using only one axis. With the wedge tipped in the correct position (your latitude) it will track and keep the item in exactly the same position so you can get a long exposure. There is a second method instead of the wedge. You may have heard of the field derotater. This accomplishes the same thing by attaching it to the scope, then the camera to the derotator. It will slowly turn the camera in the oppisite direction as the field is turning. Either way is suppose to work fine. Funny thing, the derotator is the same price as the wedge. Go figure!
