: : ***What are the basic characteristics of God, when using the idea in general and not applied to any specific religion? Would we be Gods to our ancestors? : Phil, that is clearly stated, and is a question everyone with half a brain should ask. I agree with tenacious as well. I also post to everyone ideas of power, control, and manipulation. God, in any religion, seems to me that He would be beyond creating any such beings of our form. (life) ***Yes, history repeats itself over and over, religion is the major tool used to gain and maintain power, control and manipulation over the people on this planet. The other which is used in conjunction with it is force and/or threat of force. We are only now begining to break from this pattern. Europe is in the forefront of this movement away from such ways of societal defaults. They are finally starting to think for themselves in masses, rather than intellectual individuals with courage to speak the truth that is displayed around us, that there is no such being. And further how beief in such gave them a lesser enjoyment of life while we have it. Unfortunately, the force/religious government is not extinct, the middle east and to a point in our own country this method continues to operate. Luckily, we in the U.S. have a good bit of freedom today, which means that eventually, the new thinking will overcome the old because the force aspect is mostly removed. Although if it can be pursued by the government against religious sects (Waco) then athiests are not completely secure. Social pressure in rural areas is also a big obstical in the U.S.
