Mario,

It's easy to ask a pole and look for a 'majority' of opinions. The question is what has been the definition throughout humanity's intellectual history. You need to consider the thoughts of Liebniz, Spinoza, Newton, Paine, Whitehead, Pierce, James, Kant, Aristotle, Plato, Einstein, etc... etc... If you limit yourself to a largely American populace then I'm afraid that you won't be anywhere near a correct portrayal of how the term 'God' has been used throughout history. Even today you have philosophers, theologians, and scientists who are using the term 'God', so you cannot define the usage so narrowly as to restrict the beliefs of so many. The reference to God has always included something fundamental about the universe (an invisible non-material 'force'), having causal effect on the universe (or its beginning), and exerting some from of direction to the universe (teleology). I think this term excludes materialists and this is where atheism has more or less been associated.

Warm regards, Harv
