Alan,

Interesting point of view about babies. It just occurred to me that when people say they are seeking the meaning of life, they probably mean they are seeking meaning for their toil. When you're upset with your boss or struggling with a difficult problem at work, you find strength to keep doing something that annoys you by thinking that what you do matters, i.e, has meaning. When you're having fun at the beach, having a good time with your friends, making love to the woman of your life, the idea that life needs meaning sounds completely, well, meaningless.

"Why do I have to go through all this?", seems the thing people really want to know. They don't seem to ask it all the time though.
