: : : : part of serving GOD is the not really knowing, it's : : : : called FAITH. : : : what is FAITH? What is the basis of belief? : : : What happens when faiths collide? Is one more : : : valid than another? Not all religious faiths even : : : believe in monothesism. They don't believe or worship : : : the "same God", as some imply. Are the leaders of : : : some faiths smarter, more enlightened, insightful, : : : prefered by God? The answer is obvious. I must say that I really was impressed with The Iconoclasts questions here. However, I strongly disagree with his/her conclusions. Is the answer really obvious?? If so, what the hell are we arguing about? The argument led to "what I believe is fine, as long as it's just me" style. This philosophy cannot be upheld by all of society. If it were, people with all sorts of "faiths" would be running around, proclaiming they are right in their own belief. Someone could say "I am the Queen of Egypt in my belief". Is that okay? Sure, it might not do much harm, but there MUST be ONE reality we all agree upon, or else we simply cannot communicate with each other on a logical level. This is what science is all about, describing that one reality and cooborating with others to ensure what one sees is the same as the other. Sorry, many faiths means many problems!

: : : Belief, in general terms, is based on one of three things. : : : a) evidence : : : b) authority : : : c) an emotional need This is really interesting. I'd almost agree with this. However, which "belief basis" is the most qualified? What can we believe in the most that is true the most often? I'd say it's evidence. :)

Just to point out a few things, I have to say that I used to agree with wormster...it comes down to faith. But that begs the question "which faith is right", and subsequently "what is right". These are highly isoteric arguments, and if faith is accepted as the sole backing of moral action, the moral action becomes subjective. (Let's see, I think that I just said faith without logic is subjective, which is bad. That's what I meant to say :) I have heard this "you must BELIEVE, because God won't show it to you" argument before, and let me quote the famous phrase back "abscence of evidence is not evidence of abscence", meaning that by saying there is no evidence of God, you can't say this is evidence that there is a God.

Also, I want to point out to wormster that assumptions, like someone is an athiest, are terrible for a solid argument. The vast majority of athiests are not monsters out to purge the world of the religious. I myself used to be a devout Catholic who nearly entered the seminary. Several things caught my attention while I was on that road, little fallacies that we tell ourselves to keep the 'faith' alive, even a complete disregard for logical arguments because "they are from a non-believer". I consider myself an agnostic (even though I may seem athiest here) because there is a lot of "undiscovered territory" in science that may prove or disprove God's existance.

Oh, and Terry, I have read Hugh Ross's book and found many assumptions that are not consistant with current theory, and I was appauled by his continuation in these assumptions to the "convenient" conclusion that reconciles his faith. Don't let the "PhD" mean "I'm always right". Nice to see you still promote it though....

Enough of that. Replies welcome.
