Science has already showed that we are not essentially different from other animals, that animals are not essentially different from each other, that they are not essentially different from plants, ... huh, excuse me, where is that supposed to stop?

Either we are part of the universe or we are not. If we are, it's not reasonable to think we are controlled by principles which cannot be found anywhere else. Our subjective feelings of what a mind feels like get in the way of our understanding what it really could be.
