Alex,

It is very important to avoid misconceptions, especially since you are an educator it should be one of your primary duties to make sure that the knowledge of science is imparted correctly.

What humans do is model the regularities of nature. If we are clever enough to spot regularities in nature's behavior we call those regularities 'laws'. All scientific explanation is an attempt to understand laws through empirical means. This attempt does *not* give ontological status to the theories and models of science. If you read or hear otherwise then this is entirely misleading.
