What is the prime reason US population is far behind other countries in understanding nature?

I think, poor education is to blame. 27th place in math and 20th in physics and similar in other natural sciences, even if not to include Asia (if to include, then 5-10 more places down).

No wonder, general population does not know basics of nature and instead believes in ghosts, angel(s),Santa(s), god(s), Bible(s), Koran(s) and other halloween stuff (by the way, multibillion dollar gold mine for many smarter ones on the top of food chain).
