I think you are almost right. It's unfortunate that we end up disagreeing on the meaning of words rather than the ideas we are trying to communicate. I agree with you that it does make a difference when religion makes claims to objective, supposedly verifiable truths.

But you are wrong if you believe most religious people actually believe the claims made by the leaders of their religion. I often point to the fact that most Catholics use contraceptives and completely disregard the Vatican's position on the issue. I think it was Dick that pointed out the fact that religion is mostly a Sunday morning thing which is largely disregarded during the rest of the week by most people. In other words, people are not as stupid as their religion tries to make them.

Perhaps one could say that they are indeed stupid because they waste time with something they know at some subconscious level to be a lie. And that's where I beg to differ but my reasons are not simple to explain. I'll try to cover that in a separate thread if I find the time.
