Fortunately for our modern industrial society, the skeptic-intellects did not fulfill Paul's prophesy. What have the followers of Christ, the religious leaders with God's ear, done for society? They've killed lots witches and non-Christians during peacetime. On the other hand what have the scientists (most of which were incidently Christians or some other kind of theist) and engineers and innovators done? They helped to kill a lot of people mostly during war time.

Paul criticized the intellectuals for the same reasons religious leaders do today: they won't join their church. The wealthy and educated have always been the target of criticism by religious leaders because new religious idea tend to be accepted most readily by the poor and ignorant.

Life is as nice as it is today because of science and other non-religious fields, not because of religion.

It's not because God sent His Son to die for our sins about 2000 years ago. It hasn't caused anyone to resurrect. No graves have been miraculously emptied, not do I expect they ever will be. It's certain to me that Jesus, although he may have been crucified, never revived except in the hopeful minds of the early Christians.

It's difficult to believe anything the Gospel writers wrote when they would so willingly lie about things like the existence of Nazareth.
