It's interesting, isn't it? Human civilization has progressed further and further from widespread brutality with each generation (well, most generations, but I think you see what I mean basically. The process is in the direction of civility.) Now consider the progression of religion during this time. The Greek Gods were constantly warring with each other, seducing humans, living and dying, intolerant of any sedition. Things progressed further with Yahweh, who while still bloodthirsty, and least didn't have any other Gods to fight with. Then the God of the New Testament, all loving, all forgiving. Even our interpretation of the NT has evolved. It used to be used as an excuse for witch hunts, crusades, and inquisitions. Now, after Vatican II especially, such actions are unthinkable. Why? Because society has changed. Our interpretation of the Bible has changed. If a document can be interpreted so ambiguously throughout history, justifying tolerance and intolerance, love and hate, how much is it really worth? How can a Christian say that Christianity is true when its meaning has undergone so many convolutions throughout time? |
