Dick,

In terms of science I don't think it is good enough to say that ether exists. Spacetime, quantum foam, etc. may be 'like' ether, but it is similar to comparing Demitrius' atom with Bohr's atom, etc. It may make for interesting insights into how concepts repeat themselves, but I don't think you can say that ether is still in place in scientific thought.
