Hi Dick,

In your post "What is There to Set Religion Straight?" from April 12, 2001 15:42:11 UTC, you said

"I think John Powell has asked a very significant question and I would like very much to have what the theists present consider a good answer."

I am not sure, but I think I am a theist. I am pretty sure that my ideas are quite different from most all other people who consider themselves theists, so I cannot speak for them.

But since you asked, I thought I would reply, since I consider myself to be a theist.

I consider purveyors of religion to be anyone who preaches, or proselytizes, evangelizes, or otherwise attempts to spread his beliefs to people who don't ask for them. So I think being a theist and being a purveyor of religion are completely independent.

I also think there is very little value in categorizing beliefs into categories such as "theist". The only purpose is to simplify some communications. In my case, claiming to be a theist communicates almost nothing of my deepest beliefs, except that I believe there is some kind of consciousness that is responsible for the deliberate creation of physical reality. I think most theists would agree with that.

As for the question about uncovering liars, I don't think you can do it, other than arriving at some more or less strong suspicions.

Warm regards,

Paul
