Well, for example, a mouse gets hungry. A mouse gets scared. It has a sense of "self," it realizes it exists. A housefly, even, realizes that getting hit by a flyswatter is undesirable, so it acts to prevent that from happening. It has a sense of self and a desire to preserve self.
